Review: Becoming Rain (#2, Burying Water) by K.A. Tucker

My Thoughts

A suspenseful, sexy, nail-biting ride.

Synopsis

Luke Boone doesn’t know exactly what his uncle Rust is involved in but he wants in on it-the cars, the money, the women. And it looks like he’s finally getting his wish. When Rust hands him the managerial keys to the garage, they come with a second set-one that opens up the door to tons of cash and opportunity. Though it’s not exactly legal, Luke’s never been one to worry about that sort of thing. Especially when it puts him behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 and onto the radar of gorgeous socialite named Rain.

Clara Bertelli is at the top of her game-at only twenty-six years old, she’s one of the most successful undercover officers in the Washington D.C. major crime unit, and she’s just been handed a case that could catapult her career and expose one of the west coast’s most notorious car theft rings. But, in order to do it, she’ll need to go deep undercover as Rain Martines. Her target? The twenty-four-year old nephew of a key player who appears ready to follow in his uncle’s footsteps.

As Clara drifts deeper into the luxurious lifestyle of Rain, and further into the arms of her very attractive and charming target, the lines between right and wrong start to blur, making her wonder if she’ll be able to leave it all behind. Or if she’ll even want to.

My Review

K.A. Tucker’s second installment in the Burying Water series is full of that edge-of-your-seat, nerve-racking suspense. It’s a story about choices, destinies, deceit and unexpected love. It’s a story where good intentions get mixed and morphed into something else entirely and before too long, our protagonists, Clara and Luke, are both in too deep to see clearly.

“I’ve been in this deceitful place before. And yet, this time, it feels completely new and different. And somehow, more dangerous.”

Clara has an opportunity to prove herself. She can take her career to the next level. She just needs to get the bad guys behind bars by going under cover. She needs to become Rain Martines. A wealthy socialite who catches the eyes of Luke Boone.

Luke is the nephew of a man at the helm of a powerful car theft network. He’s being groomed to take over and Rain must infiltrate the ring, get close to him, feed information that will shatter their best-laid plans. But from the very beginning, there’s something different about Luke. A desire she shouldn’t feel. A vulnerability in him that calls to her. A softness a criminal shouldn’t have… right?

“I’m needing to remind myself exactly why I’m here in the first place. To arrest him, and put everyone he works with in cold, dark cells.”

Getting Luke to pay attention to her, however, is not so easy, especially when Luke finally gets pulled in to a part of his uncle’s business that’s really raking in the cash. It’s not legal. It’s not entirely safe. But he’s all in. Why not? It’s entirely too enticing, especially when he gets keys to a Porsche 911. But the deeper he gets, and the more Rain learns, the dirtier the business seems to be, and before they both know it, their worlds come crashing down. Trouble is, now Rain feels something more than she should… something a lot more… and she’s about to destroy the man that’s made his way into her heart.

“Guilt and happiness go to war inside of me as I fall. I wonder which one will win.”

This book kept you at the edge of your seat, waiting for things to unravel. It’s super sexy and all kinds of complicated. So complicated, that even at the end, it was difficult to get past some of the issues our protagonists battled through. Could they find their happiness when trust is irrevocably broken?

“I chose to act with my heart and not my head. I chose to think that I could somehow change him.”

I love K.A Tucker’s writing. She is a smooth and seamless storyteller and her consistency will keep me devouring and enjoying her books one right after the other. I can’t wait to see what’s coming in the next book in the series, Chasing River.
