New Review: Echo (#2, Black Lotus) by E.K. Blair

My Thoughts

Dark and twisted—the kind of thriller you can’t look away from,
as you gasp at every shock and plot twist.

Synopsis

echo coverIt’s been said the longest echo ever measured lasted 75 seconds, but I can assure you, this will last much longer. The bang deafened the world around me, muting everything into nullity, allowing the reflection of its destruction to live far beyond its intended life.

It will follow me forever, destroying me—destroying you.

You want answers?

So do I.

Synopsis

“That fire in me is gone. Only ash and embers remain. Echoes and shadows. Darkness and death.”

This book is not for the faint of heart or disposition. It pushes your boundaries, your comfort zone, pitches you well over the edge. It’s dark, incredibly suspenseful and well plotted. It’s also shocking. Disturbing. Deeply so at times. It left me conflicted, with mixed reactions to the book, which is why I felt I couldn’t give it a rating. I loved the writing—E.K. Blair continues to push herself with language which brilliantly fits the motif. As I mentioned above, the plotting is genius. It’s shock after shock after shock. There is no filler whatsoever. But the content is hard to consume. I’m not always the best audience for a dark romance and if you’ve read Bang, you know that Nina’s story is truly heartbreaking and horrible. She’s broken, surviving the most dreadful circumstances. And now, after that thunderous bang, she’s shattered. Hopeless. Guilt ridden. Utterly devastated. The consequences of her actions strike a resounding echo across so many areas of her life.

“How do I right the wrongs of my past? How do I find a hope worth living for?”

But what she goes through after the bang… after the blood is spilled… well, it’s simply excruciating. And of course, her reactions as a broken woman are sometimes difficult to understand in the sanity of our perspective.

“Sometimes, for some people, the fairytale only exists in death.”

This is certainly the kind of book that a reviewer shouldn’t spoil. We see a much more vulnerable Nina, as she grapples with how her past has tainted her future. She struggles with how the decisions she’s made have irrevocably changed people. As I mentioned above, what happens to her really bothered me, but I also understood that we are dealing with a character who does not have a normal state of mind, who is utterly broken, trying to figure out how to pick up the pieces and really, if it’s even worth it.

This is a hard read, and you should be prepared before you even flip the first page. If you tend to shy away from darker stories, this is not the book for you. But if you devour these kind of novels, this may very well be the book for you, especially with E.K. Blair’s surprising plot turns. We are definitely left with the same sort of feeling as we experienced in Bang, with a final surprise that changes everything.
