Synopsis

After a daring escape from the angels, Penryn and Raffe are on the run. My Review

It’s finally here! We finally get to see what happens to Penryn, Raffe, Paige and the others as worlds collide in this bloody, action-packed finale. This third installment picks up as Penryn and Raffe are on the run, searching for help. Paige continues to suffer through her pain, as her health deteriorates from lack of nourishment. Meanwhile, the clock ticks fatefully for Raffe, who must find someone to re-attach his angel wings before he loses them forever. Immediately, we feel just how much these two people, from opposite worlds, have been through together. We see moments of vulnerability and truth as their connection crackles, sparking to life in a way we’ve all been waiting for.

But their reality is a stark and deadly reminder that romance is an indulgence difficult to afford in the midst of all they face in the World After. The dreaded confrontation with Uriel draws near and to make matters more complicated, game-changing dark powers are unleashed. Penryn also finally learns more about Raffe, about his past, about what he must do to avoid the apocalypse from befalling them all.

As war threatens and lives are on the line, Penryn and Raffe must decide to follow their hearts, or help their own kind survive.

This highly anticipated finale packs that same gory action we experienced in the last two books (which I love). The concluding scenes had me reading fast, furiously devouring what unfolded. It definitely had that epic battle feel I hoped it would have. As I mentioned above, I loved seeing more romance between Penryn and Raffe. It wasn’t over the top, but just enough to satisfy us readers that have watched these two fall for each other over the course of their adventure.

I love Susan’s writing. I love how dark and dangerous her world feels… how there’s horror and edginess, but also a thread of humor and levity to soften the story. Supporting characters like Paige and Penryn’s mom continued to be fascinating… I  almost wanted more runway for their stories.  Overall, I think fans of the series will be pleased with this heart-pounding conclusion.
