I fell back and stared at the sky. The sun began to set as the soft shades of pink against the blue sky mixed into soft lavender. I closed my eyes exhausted from the day. I was on the verge of sleeping, but not quite there yet.

Locke had gotten to a place that no other person had ever been able to connect. The way he watched me silently as if he were guarding me, made me feel safe. And he seemed to be there in the moments that I needed him the most even when I didn’t want him to be.

I traced my finger along my skin remembering how it felt when we touched. How his fingers drifted along my skin like they were melting into it.

After Colin’s crash, I shut off that part of me. But somehow Locke was chipping at those walls and it frightened me. It was something I didn’t understand.

My mind absorbed the memory and sweet earthy scent of his aftershave. My skin warmed as I remembered the closeness of our intertwined bodies becoming one. I turned my head to the side and struggled against the weight of my eyelids. Locke. He was lying beside me, watching as if he were studying me.

“I hope you don’t mind that I joined you,” he said in a low voice with a hint of a smile that faded. “I’ll leave, if you want.”

His pinky finger touched my hand and sent shivers through my body. My pulse quickened.

I stared back at him and interlaced my fingers with his. God, this felt so right. It wasn’t what I should have done, but his touch felt too good to be wrong. I craved him.

“I needed to talk to you. Alone. Without anyone interrupting us.” His voice was tormented, as if he was fighting the same internal battle that I was. “I had to touch you.”

I rolled over to my side and leaned closer. He was incredibly stunning and my body raged in awareness. I stared at his lips wishing they were exploring my body rather than requesting a chat. I didn’t trust myself laying this close to him especially now that I knew he wasn’t sleeping with someone else, but he was right. We needed to talk.

“It’s torture seeing you and not being able to be with you,” he said.

I wanted to erase the hurt from his expression, but I needed to hear what he was going to say.

“It’s even worse to watch you with another guy,” he said.

Was he talking about Ash?

He continued, “Someone who can be with you that way. I want that.” He fingertips traced down my arms until they reached my hand and he interlaced his fingers with mine. I stopped myself from leaning closer and instead focused on his lips as he spoke. “I want to be the man you go to when you need someone. I don’t want you with anyone else. I know that makes me a selfish ass, but that’s what I want.”

I wanted him to be that guy, too. I wanted to tell this beautiful man that he would always be that guy. I wanted to beg him to kiss me and make love to me; to make me feel safe. But I couldn’t.

“You can’t,” I whispered and released our fingers.

“I know it’s wrong and I play by the rules. I believe in the rules. But when it comes to you, all bets are off.”
