Review: Five Ways to Fall (#4, Ten Tiny Breaths) by K.A. Tucker

My Thoughts

Reese and Ben’s story is wickedly fun, refreshingly edgy and irresistibly sexy. You’ll fall in love in more ways than one!

Synopsis

five ways to fallSometimes you can’t change—and sometimes you just don’t want to. Discover Ben’s side of the story in this fourth novel by the beloved, top-selling indie author of Ten Tiny BreathsOne Tiny Lie, and Four Seconds to Lose.

Purple-haired, sharp-tongued Reese MacKay knows all about making the wrong choice; she’s made plenty of them in her twenty-odd-years. So when her impulsive, short-lived marriage ends in heartbreak, she decides it’s time for a change. She moves to Miami with the intention of hitting reset on her irresponsible life, and she does quite well…aside from an epically humiliating one-night stand in Cancun with a hot blond bouncer named Ben. Thank God she can get on a plane and leave that mistake behind her.

Football scholarship and frat parties with hot chicks? Part of charmer Ben Morris’s plan. Blown knee that kills any hope of a professional football career? So not part of the plan. Luckily Ben has brains to go with his knockout looks and magnetism. After three long years of balancing law school with his job as a bouncer at Penny’s Palace, he’s ready to lead a more mature life—until his first day of work, when he finds himself in the office of that crazy, hot chick he met in Cancun. The one he hasn’t stopped thinking about.

If Ben truly were a smart guy, he’d stay clear of Reese. She’s the boss’s stepdaughter and it’s been made very clear that office romances are grounds for dismissal. Plus, rumor has it she’s trouble. The only problem is, he likes trouble, especially when it’s so good-looking…

My Review

This could arguably be my favorite KA Tucker book to date. It was refreshing, funny and emotionally charged without being overly heavy. The whole experience was simply completely enjoyable. I loved it! The writing was solid as it always is with this author, the story appealing, and the characters were unique and endearing. Ben and Reese’s story is super sexy and flirty with wonderful banter that had me smiling widely and giggling aloud. And to balance the lightness, there was also heartbreak… but even then, I sensed a hope that things would get better for these two intelligent, smart-mouthed people. They may have concluded a happy ever after permanently elusive, but in truth, they each wanted someone to love… someone to love them back… someone who wouldn’t abandon them both physically and emotionally.

So what happens when you can’t seem to get over a devastating breakup? When you’re trying to start anew? You grab your girls and you head to Mexico…

It’s been six months since she discovered her husband in the merciless throes of adultery. Six months and she hasn’t been able to let go. After drowning her sorrows in the trusted company of Jose Cuervo, Reese MacKay stumbles–quite literally–at the feet of a towering, womanizing and super hunky blond. We first met Ben Morris as Cain’s bouncer, but now Reese meets him as the guy who is determined to get her into his bed… albeit for one night only. But Ben has another thing coming if he thinks feisty, purple-haired Reese is an easy score.

“Ben Morris goes with the flow. Ben Morris is fucking Switzerland! He can get hot ass wherever and whenever he wants it, no strings attached.”

I love so many things about Reese, one being that she thoroughly enjoys to mess with people and Ben was the perfect target. From the get-go, their exchanges are wildly entertaining and humorous as they try to one-up each other in a game of come hither and I don’t think so.

“Anyone who knows me would argue that I love any and all women, and I can’t exactly disagree. But I love the angry ones the most. They’re a challenge to be conquered, the reason for their fury usually fitting neatly into three buckets: insecure, scorned, hormonal. And this purple-haired chick gazing up at me with fire in her caramel eyes? I’m betting on number two.”

To Ben, Reese is a challenge. A hot girl with fire behind her eyes. He loves women and finding someone for the night is hardly difficult. Their initial meeting however, goes epically horrendous. Safe to say, Reese is glad she’d never see Ben again… or would she?

Fate, the cruel jokester, brings these two unlikely strangers back together on Ben’s first day of work. And as it turns out Reese is nothing like Ben expected. Thrust together in this unexpected environment, their teasing escalates to new heights, but they also find themselves relating in a very effortless way. Always laughing. Always flirting. Always joking. Neither of them are looking for serious, so both are comfortable in a state of easy banter and flirtation.

“Babe, the only way a wedding ring is landing on this finger of mine is if I’m in a coffin.”

Reese is still reeling from the betrayal of her ex-husband. In her life, people have always left her behind, chosen another outcome. These choices have seeded deep-rooted trust issues that have been tough to shake. For Ben, past memories haunt him, making him fearful of the man he could be. So although their time together is filled with laughs, in reality it’s shaped by real feelings. First, without awareness, but soon under the guise of humor and dismissive one-liners. When surprising events complicate their carefree dynamic, they must face their past in order to figure out a future. They must finally come to terms with their fears and emotions.  Would they both be capable of something real?

In the end, the way the story unfolded was perfect and appropriate to their character arcs. There were moments that were heart wrenching, giving the story’s levity some weight and realness without it being overdone. It’s bittersweet to finish the last book in a series which I’ve loved so much, but I’m thrilled that it all ended so wonderfully without a speckle of disappointment. I loved every minute of this book. Loved every minute of this series! I anxiously await what’s next from K.A. Tucker!
