Review: Frigid (#1, Frigid) by Jennifer L. Armentrout (Writing as J.Lynn)

My Thoughts

Fun. Sweet. Enjoyable.
A heartwarming, witty and romantic friends to lovers story.

Synopsis

frigid coverFor twenty-one-year-old Sydney, being in love with Kyler isn’t anything new. They’d been best friends ever since he pushed her down on the playground and she made him eat a mud pie. Somewhere over the years, she fell for him and fell hard. The big problem with that? Kyler puts the ‘man’ in man-whore. He’s never stayed with a girl longer than a few nights, and with it being their last year in college, Syd doesn’t want to risk their friendship by declaring her love.

Kyler has always put Syd on a pedestal that was too high for him to reach. To him, she’s perfect and she’s everything. But the feelings he has for her, he’s always hidden away or focused on any other female. After all, Kyler will always be the poor boy from the wrong side of tracks, and Syd will always be the one girl he can never have.

But when they’re stranded together at a posh ski resort due to a massive Nor’easter, there’s nothing stopping their red-hot feelings for each other from coming to the surface. Can their friendship survive the attraction? Better yet, can they survive at all? Because as the snow falls, someone is stalking them, and this ski trip may be a life-changer in more ways than one.

My Review

“I was Kyler’s best friend. And because of that, he would never love me the way I loved him.”

This was such a fun, heartwarming read. I read it in one sitting and it had me grinning throughout. It’s sexy, light, a little angsty with some drama at the end, but most of all, I just really enjoyed it! It had that Jennifer L. Armentrout humor that I really love, which made it so entertaining to read.

So what’s the story about? Kyler and Sydney have been best friends since they were kids. They did everything together. Sydney was always a little shy and has had only one relationship, which did not end up well when her ex spread rumors that she was frigid. Kyler, on the other hand, was gorgeous, confident and a powerful magnet for women.

“Kyler oozed sex appeal, a dangerous mix of looks and intelligence wrapped in an air of unpredictability.”

For years, Sydney has been in love with Kyler, having to watch while he goes home with girl after girl, her heart constantly breaking at the sight…

“Girls were like flavors to him and I wasn’t one he wanted to taste. He’d been like that since high school, and I’d accepted it as the way it was. It had to stay that way, because I knew that, if Kyler discovered how I truly felt, our friendship would be over in a heartbeat.”

Their friendship was too important to her, so she stayed on the sidelines, suppressing her feelings as if they didn’t exist.

The story is written in dual POV, so we get to see what each character is thinking, and as a reader, we quickly see that both feel strongly for each other. Sydney means so much to Kyler… but are those feelings there because they were friends or was it more than that?

“Sydney was perfect — the actual embodiment of the perfect woman. She was practically pristine and fresh. She was untouchable. She was everything to me.”

But when they suddenly find themselves trapped together in a cabin during a heavy snow storm, things begin to heat up.

“How much snow are they calling for?”
“Somewhere between a lot and holy fuck.”

True feelings start to emerge, not smoothly, but rather haphazardly. They trip over their words, misunderstanding each other and a high level of angst ensues. To make matters more complicated, it seems someone is trying to cause them harm.

Both Kyler and Sydney struggle with their own insecurities. Sydney thinks Kyler doesn’t want her. She looks nothing like the other girls that throw themselves at him. On the other side, Kyler feels that Sydney is too good for him… especially after she’s seen him be so reckless with girls over the years.

“I would’ve give her everything if she had asked. It would probably never be enough, and I knew I couldn’t undo everything I had done in my past. I couldn’t go back and change the face that I’d been with all those girls, that Syd had seen me take home one girl after another, but damn, if she had asked, I would’ve told her that my feelings for her ran deep.”

It’s so incredibly sweet and heartwarming to see them get together. It’s clear they love each other deeply and all I wanted was for them to finally be honest with each other.

This is a good choice after an intense, emotional read. It’s a feel-good, sexy, quick-read book that I really enjoyed.

“I’ve loved you my entire life… And I would love you for the rest of my life if you’d let me, Syd.”
