Review: Sustained (#2, The Legal Briefs) by Emma Chase

My Thoughts

A touching, lighthearted romance with lots of sexy and lots of feels.

Synopsis
Sustained Emma ChaseEmma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with a brand new funny, romantic, sexy story! A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight. When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand. Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be. Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office. Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids. And that—that, I know how to do.
My Review
Author Emma Chase seems to have the unfailing ability to deliver a story that makes you smile widely with the perfect combination of humor and emotion, tender and sexy. Sustained was another home run, and I devoured this story about love, life and family. The dialogue, the chemistry, the characters… everything came together in a way that made the reading experience so enjoyable and satisfying. Jake Becker is back—he’s the one-night love ’em and leave ’em kind of guy. He’s dedicated to his career and the last thing he needs is any romantic entanglements. Jake can seem hardened and heartless, with an intimidating demeanor in and out of the courtroom. But fate has other plans when a chance occurrence leads him to the door of Chelsea McQuaid. Chelsea’s brother and wife have recently died in a tragic accident, and she’s caring for her six nieces and nephews. Her life is full, crazed and barely contained. Jake finds himself unexpectedly disarmed by this beautiful, selfless, strong woman and before he knows it, he’s in deep, kids and all.

“A knight in tarnished armour is still a knight.”

The more we learn about Jake, the more we begin to see his loyalty, his need to care for and defend those in need… and this family is definitely in need of some support. But as he becomes increasingly entrenched in a life he never wanted, with responsibilities he never signed up for, his sense of preservation comings barreling at him. He doesn’t do domestic. Doesn’t do relationships. Definitely doesn’t do family.

“It was always going to end. Today, or a month, or six months from now–and it was never going to end well for her. I should have pulled away a long time ago.”

As we fall in love with Chelsea and the kids (they are all spitfires you can’t help but love!), we see Jake struggle with what his heart wants versus what his head tells him. Would his love ’em and leave ’em tendencies destroy the best thing that’s come into his life? Because suddenly, it seems he’d walk through fire for this family. A realization that scares him to the core.

“I can’t think of anything I wouldn’t do for you.”

This book is the whole package. I loved reading through Jack’s point-of-view. The kids, Chelsea, the dialogue, the feels… it all just came together wonderfully. This is a great, sexy, lighthearted read that can be enjoyed as a standalone.

“I want them to be mine. Mine to hold, mine to protect and teach. Their joy, their laughter, their love. I want to come home to it, bask in it, be the reason for it.”
