Review: Sweet Dreams (#2, Colorado Mountain) by Kristen Ashley

My Thoughts

Suspenseful and super sexy with lots of heart and humor.
I loved Tate & Laurie’s story!

Synopsis

sweet dreams coverLauren Grahame has spent her whole life thinking something special was going to happen. She didn’t know what it was, she just knew it would one day be hers. But she learned the hard way that special wasn’t on offer.

So, after divorcing her cheating husband, Lauren searched for nothing special and she thought she found it when she landed a job as a waitress in a biker bar in Carnal. It was perfect: a nothing job in a nowhere bar in Nowheresville.

Then Tatum Jackson walked in. Part-owner of the bar, he took one look at high-class Lauren and wanted nothing to do with her. And he made this known, loudly.

Tate’s angry insults seared in her brain, Lauren decides the feeling is mutual and she doesn’t want anything to do with the gloriously handsome Tate Jackson. The clash of the bartender and barmaid begins but, even though Tate makes his change of mind clear (in biker-speak, a language Lauren is not fluent in), Lauren is intent on going her own way.

Until a serial killer hits Carnal and Lauren finds out Tate isn’t a bartender, he’s a bounty hunter. He stakes his claim for Lauren before he goes on the hunt for a killer but Laurie doesn’t speak biker nor does she understand bounty hunters and Tate comes back from the hunt to find his old lady has moved on.

Life throws curveball after curveball at Laurie and Tate. As secrets are revealed, women are brutally murdered, and Lauren tries to find her inner biker babe.

My Review

There simply is nothing quite like the experience of reading a Kristen Ashley book. She’s a fix. A high. She always delivers. I could list a multitude of reasons of why her books are so awesome, but in the end, I think what I love the most is that I feel so happy and satisfied when I’m done. In fact, every time I flip the final page, I just want to grab another Kristen Ashley title and keep reading. Her characters are so relatable and I feel as if I could be one of the people in her novels. She just gets the mind and heart of a woman, amplifying the beauty of imperfections and the relatedness in our vulnerabilities. And of course, I would be remiss to not mention that she writes the best damn alpha males around. Period.

Tate and Laurie’s story was fantastically suspenseful, super hot, and utterly addictive. The chemistry between them is tangible, even as it ignites in a push and pull of wills. This is a story about second chances at love, about family, and finding the perfect place to call home.

“All my life, or a s long as I can remember, I thought something special was going to happen to me. I just had this feeling, deep in my bones. I didn’t know what it was but it was going to be beautiful, spectacular, huge. All … my … life. It didn’t. I waited and it didn’t happen. I waited more and it didn’t happen. I waited more and it still didn’t happen. I tried to make it happen and it still didn’t happen. Now I know it isn’t going to. It’s never going to happen because there isn’t anything special out there to happen.”

We meet Lauren Grahame, a forty-something woman who’s left her cheating husband and suburban life behind. All her life she’d been hoping for something special, and all she’d gotten was letdown after letdown. So she figures that she’ll leave it all behind and settle in a place she can blend in, taking on a nothing job in a nowhere town. When she pulls up to a biker bar in Carnal, Colorado, her gut tells her she’s found the right place.

“I’m not looking for a thrill. I’m not looking for adventure. I’m looking for nothing special because I can be content with that.”

But as we all well know, Carnal is teeming with big personalities, intimidating muscle and everything that is far from normal. In fact, she’s found herself the perfect place to disrupt her plans for a predictable life in which to get lost. Especially when the big, badass, gorgeous mountain man alpha and bar co-owner Tatum Jackson saunters in.

Tate is all kinds of intense, with a temper that has a tendency to flare… a temper that drives him to spout things he shouldn’t say. And when those harsh words are directed at Laurie, it stings and she is done with him before anything even begins. Their love-hate relationship sizzles and I seriously couldn’t get enough. They are two opposites colliding, two people struggling with their past who despite their differences, fit perfectly together.

“A perfect fit, made to be there. A perfect match, made to be together.”

Tate has to overcome a past rife with disappointment, heartbreak and bad decisions, while Laurie has to learn to let go of her own mistakes and embrace her something special. But even though they’ve found love in each other arms, a host of secrets, a crazy ex and serial killer on the loose threaten to shatter their dreams into pieces. And that’s if they don’t push each other past the edge, in a fit of yelling and a storm of misunderstandings.

“Tatum Jackson, you’re lucky you’re a smokin’ hot, badass, biker, bounty hunter who looks good in jeans… and I love you or you would be seriously not worth it.”

I loved that their story had a ton of angst, sexiness, humor, suspense and heart. I loved that it had heartwarming, but complex family dynamics that brought a levity and realness to the story. I loved all the supporting characters that will continue to appear in other much-loved stories. And I love that it got my heart racing big time with suspense, mystery and action threading through an unforgettable romance. Friendships and family, love found and love lost, hope and home… Tate and Laurie’s story had it all and I LOVED every moment.

“Love you, Ace.”
“Love you too, Captain.”
