Synopsis

Feb-02A woman who almost had it all . . .

On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation . . .

Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin.

On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

My Review

As first seen on USA Today HEA

Bestselling author K.A. Tucker delivers a well-constructed, pulse-pounding suspense full of propulsive plot twists and searing seduction. Set in New York City as the holiday season nears, this whodunit tale follows Maggie Sparkes, the humanitarian daughter of two energy business magnates, as she works to uncover the truth behind her best friend’s suicide.

Celine and Maggie grew up together, and while Maggie had it all, Celine struggled through school, refusing financial assistance as she worked to become an antiques appraiser. So when Celine is found dead in her apartment after an apparent overdose, there’s no one more shocked than Maggie. Celine had everything to live for.

Intent on proving there’s more to her death that meets the eye, Maggie leaps down a rabbit hole into the well-hidden shadows of her best friend’s life, as she uncovers surprising truths and clues which reveal she may have been right all along.

“The man was once my salvation. Now he will be my ruin.”

Specifically, she first finds a scandalous photograph of a mysterious man, the above words scrawled on it in Celine’s handwriting. Before too long, her probing eyes settle on a striking man Celine fell in love with, but whom no one knew about. Maggie sets out to scour for enough evidence to re-open the case, hunting down the man responsible for her friend’s death… trouble is, once she gets too close, she, in turn, becomes the hunted.

“He uncovers your secrets, your fears, your flaws–and he uses them against you. He did it to Celine. And now he’s doing it to me.”

Tucker does an expert job of developing quirky, charismatic characters each of whom could be potential suspects, some who help her along the way. We experience glimpses into Celine’s life, as clues click together, but even as things seem to coalesce, the narrative throws unexpected curve balls which keep you at the edge of your seat.

He Will Be My Ruin is engrossing and easy to devour, a seductive, suspenseful story that will keep you guessing.
