Subject: You’re a flippin’ idiot

Good morning my dear, naive friend,

I hope you’re enjoying a breakfast of regret and sorrow.

Why?

Because you sent me to work for Dean Harper, aka a control freak in a tailor-made suit. Sure he owns the trendiest restaurants in NYC, but c’mon Jo, his ego makes Kanye West look like the Dalai Lama.

He’s the type of guy that only hears the word “no” when it’s followed by “don’t stop.”

Working for Dean Harper would be like selling my soul to the devil…and before you say anything, I don’t care if the devil has punch-you-in-the-gut brown eyes and an ass to match. My soul isn’t for sale.

Love,
Regretfully yours,
Lily

My Review

There’s something special that makes reading R.S. Grey’s books so much fun. They put me in the greatest mood as I laugh and swoon over her character’s romantic escapades. Dean Harper’s story was as delightfully fun as Julian Lefray’s, but it ratchets up the tension—big time—as antagonism prevails in this enemies to lovers story.

We’ve met both Dean and Lily before. Dean is Julian’s best friend and Lily is Jo’s. Jo has just moved to New York City to give her career in the restaurant business a go, and Dean is the city’s top restauranteur.

An unfailing workaholic, Dean is driven and content with a fast-paced life free of romantic entanglements. He’s got enough women warming his bed to keep him happy (to the dismay of his family).

“You’re thirty-three years old, Dean. When are you going to settle down? Start a family?”

“Uh, never. Is that too soon? How about never plus infinity.”

He’s ornery and broody, and used to getting his way. He’s likes being in control.

Enter Lily Black who thrives on a challenge and is not the kind of girl to be pushed-over. It’s her first night at Provisions, a new restaurant in the city, and she’s proving herself by expertly flinging drinks behind the bar. She becomes the highlight of the night, successfully working the bar and its patrons, until her hubristic, but well-intentioned demeanor collides with the churlish, all-controlling attitude of Dean Harper.

“I hate you,” she said through clenched teeth. I smiled sardonically.

Dean and Lily clash in an epic battle of wills. Over and over and over again to the dismay of BFFs Julian and Jo. Complicated gets way more complicated every time they’re together.

“He pushed, I pushed back. He didn’t want an insipid Barbie. He wanted a challenge, but he kept denying it, so things between us would never change.”

Truth is, amidst all that hate, there’s also an intensifying attraction, which only fuels their verbal warfare as their physical restraint falters. They are both talented, both stubborn, and both falling for each other (though neither want to admit it). But even as they begin to act upon those feelings, everything else flies out of control. Could they ever see eye-to-eye to find themselves some happy?

Charming, witty, sexy and fun, The Allure of Dean Harper is a light-hearted story easily devoured. I read it in a single night and enjoyed it tremendously. Great banter, likeable characters and delicious tension make this book irresistible.

About R.S. Grey

I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way, I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things… everyday.

I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors include Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I’m a comedy geek and love all things “funny”. Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.

Lily, you predictable perv. I knew you’d open this email faster if I tempted you with a glimpse of JT’s “PP”. Well, put your pants back on and grab some bubbly because I have much better news to share.

I GOT A JOB!

As of tomorrow, I’ll be the new executive assistant at Lorena Lefray Designs. I am SO excited, but there’s one itty bitty problem: I won’t be Lorena’s assistant. I’ll be working for her older brother, Julian.

I know what you’re thinking- “But Jo, what’s the problem?”

Google him. Now. He’s the man in the fitted navy suit whose face reminds you that there’s hope yet for this cruel, ugly world. Keep scrolling…Do you see those dimples? Yup. That’s the Julian Lefray I will be reporting to tomorrow morning.

Lord, help us all…

Jo

My Review

Fun, fun, fun! This book was a joy to read. It touted great humor with some enjoyable tension and banter. Between giggling, swooning and flipping the pages as fast as possible, I couldn’t put it down. I loved the framework of the story. Loved that our protagonist, Jo, was a struggling blogger from small town Texas, trying not only to make it in her industry, but also in New York. And of course, as soon as our dimpled and alluring hero enters the scene, their moments together conjured a permanent smile on my face. R.S. Grey has this wonderful ability to develop relatable characters who you want to hang out with, who you want to laugh with. From the very beginning, I just knew this was a book I would love. It simply made me happy to read it.

The story centers around Josephine “Jo” Keller, a fashion blogger who focuses on style on a budget, while imbuing humor into her posts. She hasn’t had the easiest time in New York City since moving from Texas, and she’s nearly broke. This move was her big chance to do something she loved and she’s working hard to make it… to differentiate herself among the rest of the fashion bloggers.  Jo finally lands an invite to a prestigious event, and it’s there that she comes face to face with the impeccable looking Mr. Julian Lefray.

“He didn’t even know the effect those dimples had on my girly parts. One word: Ijustgotpregnant. Yeah, that’s one word.”

Julian is the brother of Lorena Lefray of Lorena Lefray Designs, the company to which Jo recently applied. He’s gorgeous, wealthy and also just recently moved to New York to help his sister run her expanding design business.

Jo and Julian meet at the event, and quickly make an impression on each other. Soon after, Jo finds herself the opportunity of a lifetime working as Julian’s assistant. From the beginning, they have an easy connection, with a smoothly flowing relationship that vacillates between laughing and working, and well, er… lusting, lusting and more lusting. Because one thing is for sure, the more time they spend together, the more the tension escalates.

“The continuous tease of having to be around him the last few weeks had built up the desire in my veins. Each day the passion had built with no outlet for escape.”

Very quickly, the friendship becomes important to them both, but as their feelings morph into something significant and desire threatens to boil over, they must both consider what they are willing to sacrifice for taking the risk of opening up to each other.

The entire story is deliciously entertaining and a very quick read. Funny, light-hearted and romantic, this is the perfect summer read to gush about with friends. I look forward to seeing more from Grey, who is quickly becoming a go-to author for feel-good reading.

Excerpt

I had a feeling that once I left his office, I’d never hear him speak of it again. I’d probably convince myself that I’d made the whole thing up in a weeks’ time.

“And Cameron,” he spoke, forcing me to pause as my hand hit the door knob. I turned my head to look back at him, hope brimming through every pore. His eyes locked with mine as he continued, “It’s not Grayson. It’s Mr. Cole. I’m not your friend while you’re here.”

I bristled at his reprimand. There he was. The formal prick. He wanted to put me in my place, but I knew his secret now. You can’t just turn attraction off like a light switch. I may have had torn tights and smudged make-up, but I was the same girl I’d been for the last twenty-two years. Which meant, deep down, Grayson was still attracted to me. A small smirk unfolded across my lips as I realized the power that knowledge gave me.

“And what about when I’m not here?” I asked, tilting my head to the side and staring into his blue eyes with more confidence than I’d felt all morning.

Review: The Duet (#1, Heart) by R.S. Grey

My Thoughts

Irresistibly witty and bright, this romantic comedy
had me feeling swoony, happy and warm.
A lighthearted, feel-good read that is not to be missed!

4halfstars

Synopsis

duet coverWhen 27-year-old pop sensation Brooklyn Heart steps in front of a microphone, her love songs enchant audiences worldwide. But when it comes to her own love life, the only spell she’s under is a dry one.

So when her label slots her for a Grammy performance with the sexy and soulful Jason Monroe, she can’t help but entertain certain fantasies… those in which her G-string gets more play than her guitars’.

Only one problem. Jason is a lyrical lone wolf that isn’t happy about sharing the stage—nor his ranch — with the sassy singer. But while it may seem like a song entitled ‘Jason Monroe Is an Arrogant Ho’ basically writes itself, their label and their millions of fans are expecting recording gold…

They’re expecting The Duet.

My Review

Every now and again, I crave a good romantic comedy. A novel that will fill me up with with laugh-out-loud moments and swoony romance. Unfortunately, however, finding that kind of book is not an easy feat. It’s difficult to achieve the right kind of balance of wit, emotion and angst for it to work well. Thankfully, R.S. Grey manages that and more in this irresistibly funny and heartwarming release—The Duet. The writing style felt fresh and unencumbered, witty and real… elements of romance and humor in just the right amounts to have me flipping the pages with a huge smile on my face. I loved the sassy, sweet and unapologetically girly heroine, Brooklyn Heart. And I fell for the talented, brooding, enigmatic Jason Monroe. Their love story was a perfect mismatch… two opposites that somehow worked together just perfectly.

“Who needs booze and blow? No thanks. All I wanted was a good ol’ fashioned, wake the neighbors, scratch marks down the back orgasm.”

Pop star Brooklyn Heart was so done with her dry spell. All she needed was a hunky boy for a feel-good one-night-stand. Cue one debaucherous night with her sister, Cammie, coupled with a hot-but-horrible-in-bed Brazilian model, and Brook is running way late to her label’s early morning meeting. A meeting where she comes face-to-face with Jason Monroe. The famous, folksy singer lusted after by most of the female population. And when their record label pairs them up for a duet to be performed on the Grammy’s, Jason is staunchly not on board.

“No offense, princess. But you and I are like apples and oranges. We’d never be able to collaborate on a song together.”

Regardless, business wins and these two very different artists are forced together and Jason is not happy at all. Brook’s first impression was rather… chaotic. I couldn’t help but love Brooklyn, however. She’s that impossibly laughable and likable girl who is entirely relatable. She tries to reach out to Jason, to show Mr. Gods Gift to Music her good side, but he couldn’t care less. He dictates that Brook show up in his ranch in Montana, to get the song written and done over the course of the month. Despite her best efforts, Jason is all kinds of rude and ornery.

“Team Brooklyn is currently accepting new members. The only requirement is that you also loathe Jason Monroe.”

Their time together is charged with preconceptions and misunderstandings and an intensifying something else. But there was more to Jason that met the eye, and he was not giving an inch on what that was all about. Their productivity was non-existent, their bickering unrelenting, and the surge of desire impossible to ignore. So in a last-ditch effort, they make an arrangement to unleash their creative and personal frustrations between the sheets. Nothing more. Nothing further.

And it was the most wonderful thing Brooklyn had experienced.

And the lyrics and the music… it all started coming.

And they couldn’t get enough of each other.

“I was a simple person. I just wanted good chocolate, my guitar, and maybe some sex every now and then. Maybe Jason and I were perfect for one another.”

With each moment they’re together, and with the walls between them slowly fracturing, feelings muddle up their not-so-solid-anymore arrangement. But when a truth is revealed, Brook’s heart is broken and everything that’s happened between them is suddenly crystal clear.

There was nothing there to begin with.

“So our future was set. We’d have our time together at his ranch and then when I left, our little fling would be over. We’d be over.”

Fast-paced, funny, sexy and romantic, you’ll be feeling good while devouring Brook and Jason’s unconventional love story. I loved the way it ended, loved both our protagonists, loved their banter and loved the supporting characters too! The series continues with Brook’s sister, Cammie, and her friend and uber-hot architect, Grayson. I can’t wait!

“… life was presenting me with my very own version of a love song.”
