Review: Breaking Her (#2, Love is War) by R.K. Lilley

My Thoughts

An exciting finale full of shocking surprises.

Synopsis

Mar-29DESTRUCTION. BETRAYAL. RUINATION. TRUE LOVE.

SCARLETT
He had done it again. Ravaged me. Burned me. Broken me.
Given me air, only to leave me gasping, writhing.
But then something changed. Something that terrified and excited me both.
Something that utterly destroyed me.
Something that made me whole again.

DANTE
Our love was cursed from the start. She didn’t know it, but I did.
All she knew was that I’d lied to her, betrayed her. Done unforgivable things. Unavoidable things. Yes, I had broken promises as surely as I had broken her heart. But, just as every war has casualties, and every lie has consequences–every bastard has his reasons.

My Review

He’s the best I ever had. And the worst thing that ever happened to me. True love is a bitch.

R.K. Lilley reveals shocking answers to the questions and insecurities that plagued the explosive relationship between Dante and Scarlett. Theirs was a relationship first rooted in safety and protection, physical and emotional connection, but then one that ran wild with pang of desperation and betrayal. They needed each other, hated and loved each other—fiercely.

Yes, I do love you as much as I hate you.

Breaking Her unravels their twisted story in alternating Scarlett/Dante perspectives as well as past and present tenses. Secrets hid in their history, truths that pushed them together and pulled them apart.

We begin in an all-too-familiar way—Scarlet devastated after yet another surge of hope, another round of heartbreak thanks to Dante. Yet every time she’s determined to leave Dante in her past, he comes barreling back into her life.

What Dante had done, how he’d messed with my head, yet again… I won’t say it hurt more than the first time, or even that it was more shocking. Once you’ve been broken, every break after, even when they hurt like hell, can never outdo the profound damage of the first time.

Every conversation, every fight, even their lovemaking, is charged, wild, frenzied, out of control. But this time, when the truth begins to filter out, the bottom falls from under Scarlett.

What he had to tell me didn’t just sober me up. It changed everything.

The lies, the truths, are all hard to swallow, and Scarlett must make choices that will either sever everything they’ve had or finally bring them together.

Was there some chance that I could turn my bitter memories sweet again?

If you loved Breaking Him, you’ll be fully hooked on how the puzzle pieces to their story finally come together. Heartbreak and love, sadness and hope, betrayals and long-awaited truths—this highly anticipated sequel has got everything you’ve been anxiously waiting for!

You never get to stop loving me.

Review: The Other Man by R.K. Lilley

My  Thoughts

Scorchinga deliciously hot page turner full of intrigue and angst.

Synopsis

the other manLourdes

He was brazen as hell from the moment I laid eyes on him. He was aggressive, and dominant, with Mack truck arms, and a bar brawler voice.

He was too good looking for his own good, with a hard jaw, and harder eyes.

I’d always led a fairly peaceful life, but even I could tell at a glance that this man was dangerous. For so many reasons.

Not the least of which being that rough, dirty, sheet-clawing sex fairly radiated off him.

I’d thought I’d known how to handle every kind of man, but this one left me baffled.

To say he wasn’t my type was putting it lightly.

But you couldn’t tell that to my libido.

Not even when I found out the truth.

My lover had lied to me from the very start.

Nothing about our meeting was a coincidence.

My Review

I’m such a big fan of R.K. Lilley’s novels. They are the perfect blend of steam and story, and lately, just the right amount of suspense to keep me addicted. The Other Man is the story of Lourdes and Heath, whom we met in The Wild Side series. From the beginning, there was an instinctive allure to Lourdes… the older woman who had crushed on Dair, and who felt so put together and elegant. And then there’s Heath. He exudes mystery, hides secrets. He’s surly and dangerous. Brutish. And sexy as hell. From the moment the two collide, sparks fly, flesh craves. For a women like Lourdes, who had never felt that kind of fire, meeting a man like Heath only promised the kind of burns she may never recover from.

“I’d come to the attention of a man who didn’t play by normal rules, and my life was about to get very interesting.”

There was something about Heath that Lourdes couldn’t stay away from. She knew she was playing with flames, but her body desired to risk it all for one night of unrestraint.

“He was a wild thing that was not even close to being tamed.”

Their time together was hot as hell. But just as quickly as he had entered her life, he was gone. Vanished. It was clear that Heath hid everythingfrom his feelings to his job to something more not yet discernible. He was vague and secretive and absolutely dangerous.

“His eyes would never be the window to this soul. It was hidden somewhere else.”

But as Lourdes struggles with understanding him, with the expectations around everything to do with him, with her own desires and happiness, he continues to come back, disrupting all her best-laid plans. The more time they spend together, the more he softens. What was supposed to be a one-night stand is now suddenly more, but so far short from a relationship. Was Lourdes affecting him in a way that would nurture the possibility of a future?

“He was rough around the edges… He was uncivilized. Churlish. Uncouth. And strangely, kind of sweet.”

The story unravels through Lourdes’ perspective, but we get the sense that Lourdes does reach Heath in a way that’s real. But at the same time, the more turns the story travels, everything we’ve experienced gets questioned.

“I don’t have a future, Lourdes. But if I did… If I did, it would be yours.”

This all happens on a timeline parallel to The Wild Side series, so it was really cool to experience this other side, knowing some of what was happening. In addition, there are some scenes that had me smiling big, especially if you’re a fan of the Tristan and Danika series, and the Up In The Air series. The first half of the book really sets up just how unbridled their desire is. How they can’t stay away from each other, while the second part, anchors us emotionally with some addictive angst and heartbreak. I just loved everything about it, loved the brooding, reluctant hero. Loved to see a tortured soul find peace unexpectedly. Loyal readers of R.K. Lilley’s books will LOVE this as much as I did, and new readers can enjoy this as a sizzling standalone novel.

Review: Dair (#3, The Wild Side) by R.K. Lilley

My Thoughts

thrilling finale to a wonderfully addictive and suspenseful series!

Synopsis

dairARE YOU READY FOR THE TRUTH?

I’d started writing everything about her down.  I didn’t want to forget. The color of her hair.  The depth of her eyes.  The stubborn shape of her jaw.  The way her lips shaped words with such expression.  The way her voice made my chest ache.  The way she gave advice beyond her years.    The way she listened like she cared about every word. The way she made me feel—Alive.  Every curve and hollow of her body was recorded, in my mind, and now my hard drive.   There was a bit of truth in every lie, and even if it had only been fed to me in the smallest increments, I wanted, needed to remember the real Iris.

Because in the end, there was one irrefutable thing that he couldn’t deny.

Hostage or hustler, sinner or saint, whatever she was or wasn’t, whether she lied to my face or taunted me with hints of the truth, all of this seemed always to defer to the more pertinent fact at hand.
She was mine.
Inconceivably.
Undeniably.

After yet another shocking discovery, followed by a disturbing letter, Dair is almost certain Iris has left his life for good.  He tries his best to move on. Easier said than done, and when an unexpected and dangerous opportunity arises for him to find out what happened to her, he doesn’t hesitate to take it. As usual, with Iris, the answer leaves him more lost than the question. Every revelation is shrouded in mystery, and every disclosure leaves Dair more in the dark than ever.

And when finally, the messy truth is revealed in its entirety, will he be ready for it?

My Review

“There was a bit of truth in every life, and even if it had only been fed to me in the smallest increments, I wanted, needed to remember the real Iris.”

After two riveting installments, it’s not an exaggeration to say that I was going mad trying to figure out the truth of who Iris really was. The puzzle pieces seemed in reach, they just didn’t quite fit into place. After book 2, we’re left in a sea of incertitude, while Dair is left to drown in his despair. Iris is gone and Dair is once again trying to battle a life of mundanity, one bereft of her color and vivacity. But Dair was in deep and he couldn’t let it go. Couldn’t let the secrets go. The questions. The hole he felt inside. He couldn’t forget Iris.

“I tried it again. Tried moving on from her by keeping busy. But this time was so different, the weight of her absence heavier with grief of permanence attached.”

And once again, an uneventful day brings shock and surprise as Dair finally has the chance to learn what happened to the woman he loved.

The situation he finds is different. Dangerous. And he’s left with more questions than answers… more trepidation… more uncertainty than ever at what will happen next. He’s also forced to confront his true feelings for Iris. Was it love? Something else? Something wrong… or something fated?

“How could you be in love with a person you didn’t really know? Someone that had fed you nothing but lies? Someone you knew with certainty you couldn’t trust?”

I don’t want to spoil a single moment of this riveting conclusion, but I can tell you that it left me smiling widely and feeling wonderfully. The end came full circle in a way I thought was absolutely perfect. Expect the same level of maddening suspense and intrigue, but with scenes that are unexpectedly emotional and heartwarming. This has been a great, well-plotted series that kept me wanting more more more with every moment, every chapter, every book. Fans of the first two installments will be thrilled to finally discover the real Iris.

Synopsis

iris coverARE YOU READY FOR A TWIST?

Who is Iris? Where did she come from? Where has she gone?

Alasdair Masters has more questions than answers about his new, too young obsession, and when he finds out she’s been lying to him, from their first meeting to their last one, he’s more confused than ever about her feelings, her intentions.

And what’s just as confusing are his own feelings. Has he turned something purely physical into something emotional in his own head? Is any of it mutual?

The only thing he doesn’t question is whether he’ll keep going back for more.

DAIR
Me, I was simple. I was order. A very neat, efficient machine that ran on nothing but air.

Me plus anyone else, well, that was another matter. And me plus Iris, that was a monster of a machine, with all gears going at different speeds, some spinning off their hinges, just going mad, but it was a wonderful madness, at full throttle, misfiring in all directions.

It felt wonderful and dreadful.
I was breaking down, and it felt amazing.
And terrifying.

My Review

“She was soothing chaos. Like that first taste of anesthesia, before you lost your sense. Or the venom that numbed you before it killed you.”

Gahhhhhhhhhhhhh. You know that feeling when you are so into a book and you’re dying to know what happens… and the plot thickens, the twists get twistier, the mystery deepens and it’s so good because you feel the answers just infinitesimally out of reach, but oh-so close? It’s a wonderfully, exhilarating, suspenseful feeling… right up until it ends and you’re left with your mouth wide open, shocked and restraining a strong desire to send inappropriate messages to that story’s author! Yup. R.K. Lilley did it again. She’s woven an addictive tale I can’t seem to get enough of. I was so into this book and I left with more questions than answers. It was supremely sexy. Deliciously suspenseful. And entirely captivating. This series may be driving me mad, but mad in the best possible way. You thought The Wild Side was hot… this is hotter. You thought it was full of mystery… this takes it to another level. You thought you knew something… you don’t know anything.

Who is Iris????

“It was Iris, but Iris was a stranger… It was like she was a curious, wild, imaginary creature, with the pieces of her just now put together, invented for my eyes, not how I remembered at all, because even when she’d been angry, she had never been cold… Which one was the real Iris?”

Iris left Dair. Deep down, he expected that would happen. She was something different. Something wild and uncontained. A force that brought unexpected verve into his life… he knew she would be difficult to keep.

And she was full of lies.

But yet, he missed her desperately. His life had been irrevocably changed because of her and now he was acutely aware of her absence. Until one day he saw her… she met his gaze and the chaos whirled all over again. Iris was definitely Dair’s weakness. She was an addiction—an obsession he was powerless to abandon. He couldn’t say no to her. She would overpower him with her tenacity. With her touch. Her love?

“I don’t have good judgment when it comes to you…”
“Maybe good judgement is overrated. Maybe it’s time for you to be bad.”

We don’t know where Iris has been. We don’t know who she really is. We do know, however, that there is some kind of constraint that keeps her from seeing Dair as much as he’d like. We can see this affecting him at a visceral level. Iris was a drug to him. A insatiable need. She made him feel real, alive. And without her, he was bereft of all the goodness she brought. But Dair is an intelligent man, and despite the beautiful chaos she brought to his life, he needed to know more. The desire to get answers relentlessly pounded under the surface.

“It was both torment and solace to look at her again. An agonizing comfort. Me, I was simple. I was order. A very neat, efficient machine that ran on nothing but air… And me plus Iris, that was a monster of a machine, with all gears going at different speeds, some spinning off their hinges, just going mad, but it was a wonderful madness, at full throttle, misfiring in all directions.”

The dynamic between Dair and Iris is so fascinating to take in. I would say there’s a fight for control, but in reality, there isn’t much of a fight when Dair is powerless to her. She seems to want him, need him, love him, but we really don’t know if there’s truth behind her convictions. For Dair, he’s willing to take what he can get from her… limited time. Even hours. And worse yet, he can feel trouble looming. Was their last goodbye coming?

This book is on fire. It’s so hot. So suspenseful. So intriguing. R.K. Lilley expertly creates a consuming sense of collusion that is thoroughly unsettling. Duplicity and desire. Sex and seduction. Lies and love. So many things are at play, that I didn’t have a grasp of what was real and what was manipulation. And it was that intrigue that kept me devouring page after page, waiting to see what would happen next.  I anxiously await the final installment, Dair, to see how it all will end! I can’t wait!

“In a world full of lies, you were my truth.”
