Review: The Opposite of You - Vilma Iris | Lifestyle Blogger

I’ve sworn off men.

All men.

Famous last words, right? You’re expecting some epic tale of reluctant love and my dramatic change of heart? Well, you’re not going to get it.

I’m stubborn. And headstrong. And I’ve just survived the worst three years of my life. After escaping an abusive boyfriend to live in hostels and cheap hotels while I worked my way across Europe, I’ve come to two conclusions.

The first? Now that I’m back home, I’m going to squander my expensive culinary degree on a food truck that caters to the late night drunk crowd.

The second? I’m going to prove to the bastard across the plaza that my street food is better than his fussy five course monstrosities.

Killian Quinn might be Food and Wine’s Chef to Watch Out For. He might have a Michelin Star. He might have every food critic in the city wrapped around his too-large fingers. But he’s also pretentious and unbearably arrogant and the very opposite of me.

So he can keep his unsolicited advice and his late night visits and his cocky smiles. I want none of it. Or him.

I want the opposite.

The Opposite of You
By Rachel Higginson

Review: The Opposite of You

Can a talented food truck cook find love with a famous yet arrogant restaurant chef who’s criticized her food?

With The Opposite of You, Rachel Higginson draws us into a bright and clever story full of life, humor and possibility. This enemies-to-lovers romance flourished in the late-night food scene, coming to life in a way that felt real with characters I quickly felt invested in and wanted to learn more about—a hallmark of the Rachel Higginson books I’ve read to date.

Every interaction crackled with tension and chemistry and from the very first pages, I couldn’t get enough, couldn’t read fast enough. The story of Vera and Killian shines brightly and I adored every word.

After a bad breakup, Vera Delane escapes to Europe to immerse herself in the hustle and bustle of small kitchens, to hone her long-time love of cooking. She’d always dreamed of running the kitchen of a renowned restaurant, but life had thrown a wrench in the possibility of it and her reality had sent her back home to Durham, to pour everything she had into a shiny, new food truck venture.

Across the street, Chef Killian Quinn enjoyed his status as the darling of the food world. Loved by critics and immensely talented, his dishes graced the tables of the restaurant Lilou. But as Vera should have expected, his talent was marred by the arrogance and condescension she had felt first hand. This motorcycle-riding-bearded-bad boy had made it clear her food wasn’t good enough and her business didn’t have a place in their shared plaza.

And yet, night after night, Killian couldn’t stay away, couldn’t forego the opportunity to try more of her food, even if it was only to tell her how she could do better.

But as Vera’s turbulent past threatens, and her interactions with Killian begin to change, new desires and possibilities fill her every thought. And as it turns out, there’s so much more to Killian than she expected. She’d been there before, however, she’d trusted someone like him and she’d promised herself to one day find the exact opposite of someone like Killian Quinn. Could she trust him with her heart? With her future?

I promise you, you’ll fall in love with this story as deeply and easily as I did. I could see the entire thing in my head, vivid scenes of a new favorite movie. Higginson’s novel is delightful, delicious and an cherished addition to my 2017 favorites list.

I keep seeing this one pop up everywhere! I have to admit, what got me was the “too-large fingers” bit in the blurb. Already has me imagining all sorts of deliciousness. One clicking now!
