Unmasked 2 Synopsis

UnmaskedV2 iBooks-1I left my former life – and my mask – behind.

Running from a past where I was born unloved. A past where I was betrayed by love.

Running from an organization with limitless power and stealth. Running for my life.

I never expected to find love on the run. Not in a tiny seaside town on an island in the middle of nowhere.

Not without my mask.

But it seems as if my sad story is being rewritten with someone else’s pen. But whose pen is it?

This question haunts me day and night. And I get my answer on a perfectly decadent evening. When I come home to find my bedroom perfumed with the scent of death.

He’s here.

My Review

Do not read review if you’ve not yet read Unmasked 1. Otherwise, this review is spoiler free.

Volume 2 picks up soon after the shocking end of Volume 1, with Alex on the run. She’s still reeling from what she’d done, from the truth she’d discovered, for what she was able to feel for Daimon. Now, she’s determined to live a life unmasked, as she figures out her next move. When she arrives in a small seaside town, she takes on a new persona, one who does not hide in the dark or under thick makeup, rather one who is confident during the light of day. And one who cannot seem to forget the man that taught her to love. The man she killed.

“… everything changed the night I met Detective Daimon Rousseau. He didn’t just change me into a woman. He changed me into a woman with a purpose. And my purpose was to make him pay for what he did to my father. Out of the darkness and into the light, a new Alex was reborn as Alyssa.”

Alex’s resoluteness in forgetting Daimon is entirely futile. The more she tries to forget him, the more thoughts of him permeate every second of her day, even as her heart battles between hating him and loving him and missing him. She even seems to smell his scent in the air, his presence with her still somehow. But then she meets Nick, who decidedly is not Daimon, but who is handsome and alluring in his own right.

She is attracted to him, but she is still suspicious. Her past has ingrained her to be that way. I found that really interesting. She questioned everything and everyone, her mind hard-wired to to do so. She couldn’t just be. But was Nick who he said he was? Did he want to kill her? Was he working for Daimon? Was there a possibility Daimon was alive? So many questions haunted her.

“My purpose is to save her. To love her. And I will stop at nothing to do just that.”

And just when she feels her guard begin to slip, surprises await and trouble finds her. Truths are revealed, including her own and the she must make a choice.  Because suddenly her past is invading her present once more, and as we move into the final installment, we see that Alex has to face that past head on. The time for retribution is upon her. But once again, she must figure out who she can trust.

“I love you, Alex. I’ll always love you… In the light and in the dark. With a mask or without. I love everything about you.”

What I have loved most about this series is that I never knew what to expect. Cassia is an expert storyteller and she weaves the story in directions I didn’t anticipate. I will say I found it difficult to get inside of Alex’s head… understand her motivations. It surprised me to see her fall for a man like Nick, particularly since thoughts of Daimon were ever present. But in the end, I loved how it wrapped up. It was that perfect, edgy, non-typical happy ever after that was right for the characters.

The Unmasked serial is comprised of three volumes (below) and is a great, quickly read series for readers who love mystery and intrigue, sexiness and love, action and suspense!

About Cassia

New York Times bestselling author Cassia Leo loves her coffee, chocolate, and margaritas with salt. When she’s not writing, she spends way too much time watching old reruns of Friends and Sex and the City. When she’s not watching reruns, she’s usually enjoying the California sunshine or reading.

She believes in true love and happy endings, and that the most palpable regrets come from watching those two things slip away. Her favorite books and movies are the ones that challenge her mentally and leave her emotionally scarred. Her family has declared her a “method writer” because she gets “in character” while writing. She believes becoming the character is the only way to truly understand him or her. Her dream is to one day score a record deal based on her awesome shower singing skills.
