Synopsis

Nov-10“Marry me.”

“What?” I stared back at him, unblinking.
He moved closer, taking my face in his hands. “I love you, Evie. I look into the future, and the only thing I see clearly is you. Marry me.”

What’s an eighteen-year-old girl who was madly in love with her nineteen-year-old boyfriend say?

Of course, I said yes.

Twenty-four hours later, I married Adam Gunner at a Vegas chapel to the sounds of “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. Not the best omen. I get that now.

Then, exactly one week later, I left him. I walked out, leaving behind my wedding ring, annulment papers, and my heart, and he never knew why.

I haven’t seen him since. Not in ten long years.

Now, he’s here, standing before me. Looking at me with nothing but hurt and hatred in his eyes, he wants answers.

Answers I can’t give.

My Review

There is always something special about second chance romances. I cherish the idea that true love can find a way no matter what life throws at you. And so these stories call to me… I love the anguish and pain that makes me relish the happily ever after all the more. When I read the synopsis to When I Was Yours, I knew this was a book I had to read.  Evie and Adam’s second chance story proved to be one flooded with feels—hate and love, hurt and needing.

“I lusted her, then loved her, and then hated her. I’ve mentally chased her for the last ten years.”

Adam and Evie met by happenstance, but from the very beginning, feelings and desires were intense. There was something so right about them together, something so destined. A first date quickly became a second, became more, and morphed into a promise of forever. They were two halves of a whole.

Adam came from a wealthy, but disinterested family. His mother was a famous movie star, his father was never around. Adam was set to inherit a powerful Hollywood studio, despite never feeling a passion towards the business. Evie, on the other hand, was a free-spirited artist who carried a heavy load upon her shoulders. Her younger sister was ill and her father could not hold a job due to injury, and so she worked tirelessly for the people she loved. Despite coming from two different worlds, Adam and Evie knew they couldn’t live without the other… and so they married.

One week later, Evie left Adam without explanation, with only annulment papers and her wedding ring communicating the unimaginable.

Ten years passed. Ten years of searching. Ten years of Adam nursing a hate he never thought possible. Ten years of sleeping with lookalikes and trying without avail to get over the girl who shattered him.

“I never could get enough of Evie. And no matter what she’s done to me, whether I love her or hate her, I will always want her.

I fucking hate that.

I hate that she’s my weakness. She controls my life, and she’s not even a part of it.”

Until Adam and Evie collide unexpectedly.

Emotions from them both burst free… for Adam, rage boiled over, for Evie, tears and pain consumed. All Adam wanted to know was WHY, but Evie couldn’t tell him the reason she left. And when she finally does, it’s not an easy pill for Adam to swallow.

The story alternates between past and present, in both Evie and Adam point of views. In the past, we see a couple that loved each other without abandon. In the present, we see resentment and anger prevail, even though it’s clear they both haven’t stop loving each other despite it all.

The book was very fast-paced and I read it in a single sitting. It was straight forward and emotional—a perfect fix for those of us who love second chance romances. Samantha Towle always delivers a story that you can’t stop reading, and I assure you that you’ll enjoyably devour this volatile love story.
